Investigate what a mechanical filter is, how effectively it works and what the main disadvantages are.

Mechanical Air Filters

Mechanical Air Filters
Most homes with central heating and/or air conditioning have mechanical filters in their construction. These devices are also in portable fan-forced units and serve as register covers where an air duct enters a room.

mechanical_air_filtersThe ordinary mechanical filter is a flat filter that contains coarse fibers (typically fiberglass, aluminum or synthetic material) held in place with a cardboard or plastic frame.
Other type of mechanical filters is models with permanently charged plastic films or fibers or an "electret" media. Panel filters are the last type it has a pleated or an extended surface.

Mechanical filters are generally used as filters of preliminary purification. The most efficient they are in removing of large particles of dust and wool. Partially they remove also and smaller particles. The most effective is the panel filter. Effectiveness of mechanical air filters depend on the dense of the filter material and filter surface area. They are the cheapest among air filters but they are also the least effective, stopping only 10% to 40% of pollutants. They also need to be replaced on a monthly or bimonthly basis. Fiber is nonexpendable, it is cleaned easily by a vacuum cleaner or warm water.
