In comparison with gauze packing, electrostatic filters are able to remove smaller particles right up to 0,01 microns. In the air there are a lot of the charged particles which are attracted to walls, floors, tabletops, draperies and occupants, and result in a noticeable accumulation of soot.
Mode of functioning of electrostatic filters is based on gravity of electrical charges of different polarity. Bad air passes through an ion production chamber, where particles get positive charge and accumulate on negative charged plates. These devices may also contain a fan and mechanical filter. Remember that each room requires a separate unit. 
There are nonelectronic electrostatic precipitator filters, but these are not as effective. Electronic air filters are the most efficient cleaners of indoor air, they remove up to 95% of dirt, dust, smoke and other pollutants. On the other hand they are among the most expensive.
But they are easy enough in usage. If you need to clean this filter just wash it by suds or in the dishwasher.
